1998 — Forest City Enterprises is selected as the Master Developer.
2001 — Construction begins on the first homes.
2002 — The Green Book wins the prestigious Stockholm Partnerships for Sustainable Cities Award, awarded by the King of Sweden
2002 —Stapleton’s first residents move in and make Stapleton home.
2003 — 500 families call Stapleton home, Westerly Creek Elementary starts classes.
2007 — Central Park opens with 80 great acres of open space, playing fields, and trails. Stapleton population is more than 7,500.
2012 — Ten years of strong growth make Stapleton one of the best-selling master-planned communities in the nation. The new Sam Gary Denver Public Library opens. Population of Stapleton surpasses 17,000—more than many entire towns in Colorado!
2016 — Planned commuter light rail station opens and connects Stapleton to downtown Denver and DIA with clean, green and fast transportation.
1985 — City and County of Denver and Adams County announce an agreement in principle to relocate commercial aviation operations to a new site northeast of Stapleton
1989 — Stapleton Tomorrow, a group of 35 citizens, is created to seek the opinions of a broad spectrum of Denver area residents about how to redevelop Stapleton.
1990 — Stapleton Redevelopment Corporation is founded.
1991 — Denver City Council adopts the resulting Stapleton Tomorrow concept plan in June as part of the Denver Comprehensive Plan. The plan emphasizes economic development; benefits to adjacent neighborhoods; enhanced environmental quality; high standards of urban design, educational and cultural opportunities; and the generation of revenues to support airport objectives.
1993 — City and County of Denver enters into a partnership with the Foundation. Working with elected City officials and staff, the Foundation agreed to fund and guide creation of a development plan and the physical and financial development program for the Stapleton site.
1995 — The Green Book (Stapleton Development Plan) is published, and in March, City Council amends the City’s Comprehensive Plan by replacing the Stapleton Tomorrow Concept Plan with the Stapleton Development Plan. In November, Stapleton Development Corp. is created to ensure the redevelopment of the Stapleton airport follows guiding principles of the Green Book and to lease and sell Stapleton property.
