Sustainable Development

Working to create an urban development that meets social needs, provides economic opportunity and preserves rather than degrades the natural environment.

Strategic Partnerships

One of the Foundation’s most important commitments within it’s mission statement is to focus on and help others to achieve the Green Book’s goal of creating a community that is based on the principle of sustainability.  So we support several sustainable activities at the Foundation, and we partner with Forest City and the Park Creek Metropolitan District wherever possible.

Forest City is responsible for many of our sustainable development activities at Stapleton including green building, affordable housing, energy conservation, water resource management and building a planned community that reflects the vision of the Green Book.  Their achievements are significant and many, and are explained in separate documents.  The Park Creek Metropolitan District is responsible for the planning and development of the impressive parks and open space system at Stapleton. This past year the Foundation assisted them with outreach for their community forums regarding the new recreation center at Central Park

We also co-sponsored an event with one of Stapleton’s neighborhood organizations – the Stapleton Business Association.  It was the first “Recycle It” event at Stapleton where residents from Stapleton and area neighborhoods were offered a free paper shredding and recycling opportunity.

Transportation Management Association (TMA)

The Stapleton TMA is an organization within the Stapleton Foundation committed to the alternative transportation goals set forth in the Green Book, so it is involved in multiple activities that affect residents, employees, employers and students.

The TMA works with all five neighborhoods at and around Stapleton and also with the cities around Stapleton to improve access to non-car transportation alternatives, and also to improve bicycle and pedestrian connections.  This year has been most rewarding due to the following achievements:

·        Northeast Shuttle Feasibility Study……. The TMA worked with the Rocky Mountain Arsenal, Commerce City, Kroenke Sports, City of Denver, Forest City and the Stapleton Foundation to receive a planning grant from the US Department of Transportation for $50,000.  The group is now working on a feasibility study which should be completed this year.

·        Northfield Shuttle……..When the Northfield Shopping Center opened in November there was no bus service, thus seriously limiting the ability of neighbors to access jobs at Northfield.  The TMA went to work on another partnership with RTD, and Forest City to fund a shuttle until RTD can provide bus service.  A solution was reached with funding from RTD, Forest City and  our Foundation to provide a shuttle through May 6, 2007 when the Bus Route #43 begins regular service to Northfield, three years ahead of RTD’s original projections.

·        “Bike, Walk and Roll” school events……to promote non car trips to school, a festive event entitled “Bike, Walk and Roll” was held at four schools – Odyssey, Bill Roberts, Ashley and Philips.  On the event day, parents and students were encouraged to bike, walk, roller blade or roller board to school.  Once they reached the school they were treated to breakfast, more information on safe biking and walking, and exciting prizes, the best of which were six beautifully restored bicycles by “Recycles Bicycles” a non profit organization that is working with the TMA.

·        Speed Trailer……..after many discussions with the Stapleton United Neighbors (SUN) Transportation Committee, the Foundation worked with the Stapleton Master Community Assoc. to fund a mobile speed trailer for the Stapleton community.  It was introduced after the snow melted!

·        Safe Route to Schools grant ……. Working in partnership with the City of Denver, the Foundation’s TMA received a $ 53,000 “Safe Routes to School” grant which is a planning grant to work on improvements for access to two schools – Philips and Smith.  This work will lead to improvements on 23rd, 26th, and 29th avenues.
